WILDLIFE
Nature—one of the reasons travelers come to Costa Rica—will amaze and delight you each and every day. There is so much to discover in this country that is small in size but big on biodiversity!
It owes a large part of this diversity to it’s location between the North and South American continents and it’s proximity to the Antilles Islands. This unique closeness enabled plants and animals to establish themselves and thrive in Costa Rica. It’s diverse habitats range from lowland rainforests, cloud forests, jungles, volcanoes, tropical lakes and rivers due to it’s climate and geographical makeup. It is bordered to the east by the coastline of the Caribbean Sea and to the west by the North Pacific Ocean. The Costa Rican government has moved to environmentally protect 25% of the country’s territory!
Home to more than 500,000 species, almost 4% of total worldwide species estimates, Costa Rica boasts over:
1200 species of butterflies
8,000 species of moths
175 types of amphibians, 85% of which are frogs
225 reptile types (approximately)
Of the 120 species of snakes here, about 20 types are Venomous, and 5 are Boas!
Over 894 bird species are recorded in Costa Rica; which is more than in the United States and Canada combined
There are 4 species of monkeys; the white-faced capuchin, the spider, the squirrel and the howler
Two and three toed sloths and anteaters
Costa Rica also shares many species that are seen in North America such as deer, raccoon, rodents, skunks, armadillos, coyotes, fox, opossum and porcupines!
Off the Pacific coast offshore islands and coral reefs snorkelers and scuba divers will find spectacular tropical fish, rays, dolphin, whales, sea urchins, anemones and starfish.
So come to Costa Rica and seek your adventures as you chose between steaming tropical jungles, cool, breezy mountaintops and sandy beaches.
